Trump isn’t echoing Nixon — but Jimmy Carter
NYPOST/by John Poderhoretz
The presidency Donald Trump seems to be emulating — to his detriment — isn’t Richard Nixon’s, despite analogies tossed about over the past day that have ranged from the understandably concerned to the utterly deranged. It is Jimmy Carter’s.
Just as Carter’s outsider bid in 1976 is the only real precedent for Trump’s unlikely 2016 win, so, too, is Trump now conducting his presidency in a Carter-like fashion designed to alienate politicians of his own party whose support will be crucial to the success or failure of his tenure.
By dismissing FBI Director James Comey without preparation, and in a manner that suggests a possible coverup, Trump has placed his fellow Republican elected officials in an impossible position.
